If you have ever had a pimple or experienced acne breakout even once in your life, you know how difficult it could be to deal with it. Considering it to be normal and leaving it untreated may result in scarring and pigmentation. So do take a proper care of your skin, while dealing with acne.
Here’s the list of a few dos and don’ts you can follow to keep acne under control.
- Wash your face using a gel cleanser as it would not dry your skin much. Prefer one that contains salicylic or glycolic acid.
- Use an oil-free moisturizer after cleansing your face. Using a moisturizer is a must, even if you have oily skin. After washing, our skin gets relatively dry as a result of the cleansing process. This dryness may put your oil glands into a hyperactive mode and cause them to break out.
- Use only non-comedogenic makeup (cosmetics that don't block your pores). This helps your skin to breathe better. Also, it doesn’t support bacteria growth.
- Apply sunscreen daily. Whether it’s sunny or not, do wear a sunscreen when you go out. Proper protection from UV rays will help acne to heal soon.
- Remove all your makeup before you sleep. This will open the pores to breathe and rejuvenate overnight.
- Treat acne on your back and other areas of your body. Using an antibacterial soap will help. Do wash your back after rinsing your hair conditioner. The conditioner dripping on the back often leads to back acne.
- Apply acne medication all over the affected area and not just over the zits. This will stop new zits to pop up.
- Speak with your dermatologist if you have any severe form of acne. Strong medication and oral drugs may be required.
- Don't squeeze acne. Picking your skin or acne can spread infection, making the breakout worse.
- Don’t wash your face more than twice a day. Over-cleansing can cause dryness and inflammation, pruning the skin to breakout.
- Don't touch your face repeatedly. The pimples can get infected with bacteria which can lead to scarring.
- Don't exfoliate your skin often. Using harsh scrubs and over-scrubbing can irritate your skin and make it harder for acne to heal. Prefer exfoliating once a week using natural products like gram flour and curd concoction, or rice flour with milk. This will clean the dirt and clear the acne naturally.
Incorporating these small things into your daily skin care routine can keep acne outbreaks at bay. Note that deep acne, however, still needs to be treated by a dermatologist.
