Now that the summers are here, a good deal of skin will be exposed in your summer clothes and swimwear. As this season comes with its share of skin care issues, it's a good idea to spruce up your skin and make it summer-ready.
Here are a few steps that can give you a glowing skin
1. Take-off your winter skin
Exfoliating regularly with a mild scrub will remove dead skin cells that tend to accumulate over the dry winter season. Scrubbing two to three times a week with a fruity scrub will give you a healthy glowing skin. Also, cleanse your skin in the morning and in the night to remove all sorts of dirt, makeup on it. Stick to the basics of skin care – cleaning, toning, and moisturizing.
2. Change your moisturizer
Do not make the mistake of discontinuing the use of a moisturizer
when summer arrives. Your skin needs to be hydrated in summers as well. Make a switch to a water-based moisturizer if you have been using a thick creamy one for winter. Also, look for a non-comedogenic product, which basically means that it is less likely to clog your pores.
3. Get a good supply of sunscreen
Do not depend on your last year's half-bottle of sunscreen if you mean serious sun protection. Get a good sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher with a broad-spectrum agent that protects against UVA and UVB rays. The right way of using a sunscreen is to apply it liberally about fifteen minutes before stepping out and reapply every couple of hours when outdoors, or even after swimming. If you end up with sunburn in spite of taking all the precautions, you can soothe your skin with aloe vera. Commercially available aloe-based lotions also provide relief from mild sunburn. But, if the sunburn does not heal in 4 to 7 days, do see a dermatologist.
4. Keep Prickly Heat Away
If you live in hot humid climate, in all probability you have had your stint with those tiny red bumps called prickly heat
or heat rash. Medically termed as miliaria, this condition begins with skin damage due to excessive sweating. Understandably, wearing loose cotton clothes and staying in a cool and airy environment where you do not sweat much is the best way to avoid heat rash. However, if you still get it, just take care to keep the affected area cool and dry. Skip the towel and let your skin air dry after a shower. Heat rash usually goes away on its own in a couple of days. Prickly heat powders can be used for some temporary relief. If needed, you can also use calamine lotion to soothe the itching.
5. Hold off body odor
Come summers, and most of us complain of body odors. Sweat itself is nearly odorless, as the sweaty odor is caused by the countless bacteria that enjoy thriving in the sweat in your armpits. Cleaning sweat prone areas with soap and water thoroughly and frequently is the first step towards avoiding body odor. Use an antiperspirant after the shower to keep body odor at bay. Also, wash your workout clothes often as these pairs of clothes may be harboring tons of smelly bacteria. If you still feel you tend to sweat much more than others (medically known as hyperhidrosis), do consult with a doctor.
6. Keep yourself hydrated
Last, but certainly not the least – skip cold drinks, and make water your best drink this season. Staying outdoors in high temperature results in dehydration, which can cause severe headaches. So, drink at least 8 glasses of water every day to maintain the moisture balance in your body. This moisture will eventually show in your skin too, as water detoxifies the body and cleanses out the toxins.
